I bought my clear lunchbox hydration pack earlier this year and really wanted to customize it before heading to Lollapalooza this summer. I was inspired to paint Miles Morales on my DIY Skin after watching the latest Spider Man movie that came out this year, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
I researched as much as I could about the right materials to use and ultimately decided to try the acrylic paint and Modge Podge method.
Materials you'll need:
- DIY Skin
- Pencil
- Acrylic Paint colors of your choice
- Paint Markers of your choice
- Modge Podge
- Sponge Tip Brush
First I sketched the drawing I wanted with a pencil and painted it with a white base. This is important because I wanted to make sure the paint wasn't dull. This first layer is not meant to be pretty. Then I roughly sketched the picture again to use as a guide.
After I was happy with my outline, I painted it like a coloring book and added the finer details after! I made the web design with a pencil. That way it shows when the light hits it just right giving it a nice effect.
The glitch on the Lunchbox logo is easier than it looks. I used paint markers. I painted the white glitch lines first. Then using a different color for each letter, I outlined the letters on one side to give it a kind of 3D effect. Then used the same color to draw the rest of the glitch lines.
After the paint fully dried, I checked it over and fixed what I needed to fix. I taped around the zipper and generously painted modge podge using a sponge tip brush. I let it dry for a few days before moving it.
So far it's held up well. Just a little flakey around the high movement areas like around the zipper. If I could do it again, I would use a more flexible paint like leather paint. I would also like to try a different type of sealant that's more flexible.
