Why You Should Branch Out of Your Favorite EDM Subgenre

Written by Ade Ramos (@vibewithade)

The electronic music community is all PLUR and games until it comes to the subgenre wars. Where massive debates are caused in the community over which subgenre of electronic music is better. One person says house music is better than dubstep and the dubstep fan debates back that dubstep is better than house music.

Having this narrow-minded thinking hurts the electronic music community when there are an abundance of subgenres and artists to be supporting. Yes, it’s okay to have preferences for your preferred subgenres of electronic music, but here are a few reasons why you should branch outside of your favorite EDM subgenre.

Refresh Your Love for Electronic Music

If you’ve stuck with the same subgenre, you’ll begin to notice patterns where songs can start to feel repetitive. If you listen to similar artists, there are only some small distinctions and differentiations between artists.

Branching out of the same subgenre allows you to expose your ears to some new sounds that you may enjoy. Like dubstep? Consider drum n bass. Love hard techno? Consider hardstyle. It can refresh your love for electronic music from feeling so repetitive by hearing different sounds out there and giving you more artists to listen to.

Expands Your Music Tastes

You ever find an artist that sends you down a rabbit hole? It can feel exhilarating discovering a new artist and then binging through their whole discography. Then you find another similar artist and then another one. It gives you a chance to expand your music tastes and discover new artists.

You’ll really be able to see just how abundant the electronic music scene is with amazing music outside of your preferred subgenre.

Experience Different Artists and Styles

Once you start expanding your music tastes it gives you the chance to see these artists live either at a tour set or a festival set. Your festival schedule will become much more exciting getting to experience a variety of sets.

Discover the Historical Roots of a Subgenre

Diving into a new subgenre gives you an opportunity to dive into the history behind it. Do you know where house music originated from or how techno came to be? Learning the historical roots of a subgenre gives you a deeper admiration for that subgenre as you dive into it.
